Dr. Sam Shamardi
Dr. Sam Shamardi is an established leader, educator,
clinician, author, and dental entrepreneur. He has a passion
for providing solutions to significant unaddressed problems
for dental professionals via educational programs and his
faculty position at Harvard while providing transformative
changes for the periodontal health of his patients.
Dr. Shamardi earned his DMD at Tufts University, where he
served as Class President for four years, and his Periodontal
certificate at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a
Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and Implant
Surgery and practices full-time in Boston while teaching
part-time at the Harvard Division of Periodontics for the last
decade. Dr. Shamardi lectures nationally and internationally
on a wide array of topics including but not limited to
periodontics, hygiene, hearing loss in dentistry, financial
and practice management, and innovations in dentistry as a
speaker for Catapult Education's Speakers Bureau.
He has been recognized as a dental entrepreneur for his
revolutionary EarAid product, has published numerous articles,
and is the author of The Financial Survival Guide for
Dentists. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling and spending
time with his dog Luna, and is an avid supporter of his
favorite team Real Madrid.

Course Summery:
Over 80% of the population has some form of periodontal disease,
yet practices routinely overlook periodontal treatment. Why?
Primarily because doctors and hygienists are not trained to
diagnose and treatment plan periodontal therapy. This course
reviews in detail clinical and diagnostic factors for periodontal
disease along with criteria necessary for identifying cases for
different forms of periodontal therapy and long term maintenance.

Course Description:
Does it seem
as though even less people report cigarette smoking that
the use of other tobacco products is increasing?
Today, more high school students vape than smoke
regular cigarettes.
Many partake in multiple forms of tobacco
including hookahs and spit tobacco.
Flavored products add to the appeal.
This course will examine the changing trends in
tobacco and nicotine use, and how it is impacting oral
and systemic health.

Sue has a bachelor's in dental hygiene from Wichita
State Univeristy. She hasbeen a dental hygienist for
nearly 20 years. She has experience as a chairside
clinician, dental hygiene program instructor, CE speaker
and author.
She is an active volunteer with the New Jersey Dental
Hygienists Association currently serving as their Vice
President and the 2017 Cheryl Westphall Scholarship
recipient.

Course Description:
Compared with previous
recommendations, there are currently very few patients
who require antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) prior to dental
procedures. The purpose of this course is to help dental
professionals understand the current guidelines for AP
prior to dental procedures. We will examine the growing
concern for antibiotic resistance and the role dental
professionals have in antibiotic stewardship. This
course will also focus on the 2021 AHA Scientific
Statement which reaffirms the 2007 recommendations that
emphasizes good oral health and regular access to dental
care as more important that AP for a dental procedure.
Learning Objectives:
• Define the etiology of bacteremia and
identify the incidence of bacteremia reported for daily
activities vs. a dental cleaning.
•
Review the history of antibiotic prophylaxis.
•
Understand the current AHA, ADA and AAOS guidelines for
antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental procedures.
• Examine the role of dental professionals
toward antibiotic stewardship.
•
Recognize that maintenance of good oral health and
regular access to dental care is more important than AP
for a dental procedure.
